In the wake of the epidemic, Working from Home (WFH) is becoming popular and the demand for webcams for live streaming from your computer has increased substantially. However, with so many different webcams available, which one is best? The following guide can help you choose the right one for you.

Guide to choosing a webcam

1. Application/Usage

The two main uses of webcams are live streaming and conferencing. For live streaming, high resolution and stable images are important so make sure you check the video specifications. For conferencing, you need both a sharp image and clear audio so a webcam with built-in microphones will be much better. Check the specifications of both the lens and microphone before buying.

2. Price

Most webcams are priced between $300 and $800 and come with basic features such as recording and HD video features. Some even have UHD video capabilities and live streaming, but are in the upper price range. Consider your budget and personal needs before buying.

3. Resolution and transmission speeds

The average IP camera offers quality images in 720P or 1080P. Some models even reach UHD (2K or 4K) for higher quality recording and videoing. As for transmission speeds, IP cameras are generally 30 or 60 frames per second (FPS). The higher the FPS, the smoother and more fluid the image.

4. Field of Vision

Mainstream IP cameras have a field of vision from 60° to 90° Some come with ultra-wide angle lenses to capture images in tight environments and are especially suitable for video conferencing.

5. Microphone

The quality of the microphone is important especially for conferencing and recording. All webcams come with built-in microphones. Some have noise-cancelling or even dual stereo features for clearer and more stable sound quality.

6. Tracking function

Some webcams have an image tracking function that auto focuses on the detected person or object. This can improve facial images and correct low light for clearer and brighter pictures. Ideal for meetings.
