A digital tablet is an indispensable tool for drawing on a computer. Illustrations are easy to modify and save and it helps increase an artist’s productivity. First you need to consider the actual size of the drawing pad. Choose one based on your drawing area and level of comfort. Generally, small to medium sized drawing pads are suitable for novice users and those who only engage their wrists to draw, while larger boards are suitable for professional artists and those who are engaging their elbows to draw.

Choose a model according to the size of your computer screen. A medium size is between 15” to 24”, while large models are over 24". Selecting the right size will help reduce fatigue during drawing. Remember to measure the space or desk you are working on to ensure there is enough space for the pad.

3. Pressure level

The higher the pressure level, the more sensitive the strokes and the more seamless the lines appear. Levels of pressure are: 512, 1024, 2048, 4096 and 8192. Some digital tablets already support 8192 pressure levels while others support 2048 and 4096 levels of pressure. This of course depends on the price. The higher the level of pressure, the more expensive the digital tablet.

Apart from the tablet, you will also need a stylus or touch pen for drawing and these are often supplied with the drawing pad.

They are divided into battery-operated, rechargeable and inductive categories. Induction touch pads do not require recharging or battery replacement and are relatively lightweight, making them suitable for use for long durations. Some styluses offer other functions such as shortcut keys and erase function. Select according to your needs.

Most drawing pads are equipped with shortcut keys as well as scrolling and tool switching to enhance creativity and productivity. More advanced models come with multi-touch functions that allow you to zoom and scroll with your fingers for easy operation.
