According to the "Hong Kong Mental Health Index Survey" conducted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong last year, the average mental health score of Hong Kong people was the lowest ever, with just over half of the respondents (58.9%) scoring poorly.
Maintaining our mental and physical health, especially in these difficult times, should be a top priority, but all too often our busy schedules force us to ignore signs of stress. With so many problems today, it’s hard not to have some negative emotions. But fortunately, there are still some simple and convenient ways to improve our mental health. Aromatherapy is one of them.
The principle behind aromatherapy
Since ancient times, mankind has enjoyed the benefits of herbal remedies. Ancient Egyptian, Roman, Indian and Chinese traditional healing arts are full of references to the use of aromatic plants for healing. But it was not until the early 20th century that the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy began to attract modern medical attention.
Aromatherapy works by stimulating our sense of smell through fragrances. This in turn affects our brain's limbic system which is responsible for emotions. Although research on the benefits of aromatherapy is relatively new, studies show that it helps to ease negative emotions such as stress, anxiety and depression.
It also to improve sleep and even the quality of life of some chronically ill patients. Smaller group studies have shown results in improving the lives of people with degenerative brain disease and in relieving pain.
Benefits of using an aroma diffuser
Compared to incense burners and candles which require an open flame, aroma diffusers require only electricity. This is no need to keep an eye on the flame or worry about accidental fires. Incense diffusers and diffuser bottles do not require an open flame. However, the intensity and duration of diffusion are relatively difficult to control. On the other hand, aroma diffusers are easy to use and can be used to diffuse essential oils at any time and almost anywhere.
Precautions for using an aroma diffuser
1. Essential oils are not suitable for pregnant women and children under 2 years of age.
2. Use 100% natural essential oils rather than artificial fragrances.
3. Essential oils should be used before the best use by date. Afterwards, although the oil will not spoil like food, it will lose its effectiveness.
o Fruit oils (lemon, orange, grapefruit, etc.) should be used within 9 months to a year of opening.
o Grass oils (cypress, tea tree, yucca, etc.) should be used within two years.
o Floral oils (rose, jasmine, lavender, etc.) are generally used within three years.
o Resinous oils (sandalwood, cedar, vetiver) have no expiry date and in fact the scent improves with age.
4. Essential oils should be kept at a room temperature of around 25°C or below and should not be exposed to direct sunlight or lights.
5. Many choose to use an aroma diffuser during exercise, such as yoga, but as exercise increases blood circulation, this speeds up the amounts of essential oils we inhale, so be careful of over-concentration and make sure the venue is well ventilated.
6. There may be limescale residue inside the diffuser. Clean regularly and keep it dry to avoid the growth of bacteria.
▾Waterless aroma diffusers▾
These do not require heating or water, making them ideal for users who prefer a strong aroma or for use in large spaces. However, because the essential oils are not diluted, you need to use more, so the cost is relatively higher.
▾Aroma diffuser with humidifier▾
Not all humidifiers can be used with aromatherapy as essential oils require a corrosion resistant material body and also a high frequency of ultrasonic oscillation. The following models create a relaxing environment while increasing humidity in the air to keep your skin and respiratory tract moist.
