Founded in 1975 as a Hong
Kong Electricity Group tariff collection and
promotion centre for the use of electricity
and the sale of a basic range of electrical
products, Fortress was acquired by
Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL) in 1986.
It has since become the leading retailer of
electrical appliances in Hong Kong with
around 50 outlets employing more than 1,000
staff.
In 1985, Fortress introduced its own-label
brand to the market. With a wide range of
products, Fortress brand provides the best
quality at a competitive price. In
particular, Fortress air-conditioners and
refrigerators have ranked among the most
favoured brands in Hong Kong since 2001.
In 1990, Fortress joined the
A.S. Watson Group, the retail arm of HWL.
Bolstered by the strength of this
international retailer, Fortress has
continued to set the pace in its category.
In 1996, Fortress pioneered a multi-zone
in-store retail concept with the first
Fortress World in Whampoa Garden, setting a
new market standard for providing a vast
product selection in a multi-zonal shop
layout.
Fortress promotes a culture of continuous
learning. With establishment of Fortress
Academy in 2006, Fortress provides extensive
staff training from frontline staffs to
supporting teams and managements. As a new
standard set for better services in consumer
electronics retail market, Fortress is being
well recognized and has won several 'Best
Customer Service' awards from different
media and management organizations,
including the Hong Kong Retail Management
Association’s Service & Courtesy Awards
(Specialty Stores Category) in 2002 and
2006. Fortress has also been repeatedly
named as Hong Kong Merchant of Integrity by
the Guangzhou Daily and been honoured for
its creative communications by The
Association of Accredited Advertising Agents
of Hong Kong.
As the industry leader, Fortress is
dedicated to continuous innovation and
bringing an exciting new shopping experience
to its customers. To this end, the New
Fortress concept was rolled out in 2003.
Under New Fortress, the entire network is
being re-categorized along three major
formats: Fortress World, Fortress Vision and
Fortress Digital.

In September 2004, Fortress introduced its
latest brand campaign: “Inspiring Smart
Living”. The campaign was created from
an intensive Brand Foundations Workshop
which mapped out the foundation for future
brand development. “Inspiring Smart Living”
reinforces Fortress’ commitment to
delivering an inspirational shopping
experience for digital products and includes
everything from new brand communications to
operations enhancement in each Fortress
outlet, making tomorrow’s dream of smart
living today’s reality for people in Hong
Kong and Macau.
Since the launch of its new brand image, a
wide range of innovative promotional
campaigns have been rolling out; including
the first-in-the-market “Digital Mix &
Match” Campaign in April 2005, reinforcing
its consistent effort to blend new
technological advances into daily life and
to inspire shoppers with the latest style
trends from both the digital and fashion
worlds. In July 2006, Fortress launched
another new initiative, ‘Music Moves Your
Body’ Campaign, inspiring consumers enjoy
music anytime, anywhere with a wide range of
latest digital products and exceptional
shopping incentive.

world, Fortress undertook a major
rejuvenation of its official website in July
2005. Not only does the site now feature a
